## Why AlmaLinux 9

AlmaLinux 9 is binary-compatible with RHEL 9, which has been out since 2022, so vendor support lists are more likely to name it than RHEL 10. Pick it when the software or control panel you need lists RHEL 9.

## When to pick something else

For a new server where your software supports it, AlmaLinux 10 is supported three years longer. If your team already runs Rocky Linux, Rocky Linux 9 does the same job.

## Support window

AlmaLinux 9 gets security updates from the AlmaLinux project until 2032.

- **Active support** (until 2027): Security fixes, bug fixes and the updates that follow RHEL 9's minor releases.
- **Security support** (until 2032): Security and important fixes only.

## Upgrading

Minor releases arrive with `dnf upgrade`. Moving to AlmaLinux 10 is a major-version change with no plain dnf path, so most people build a new server and migrate.
