## Why Debian 12 Oldstable

Debian 12 bookworm was Debian's stable release from June 2023 until trixie replaced it in August 2025. It's here for servers that have to match an existing bookworm setup, and for software that hasn't been tested on 13 yet.

## When to pick something else

For a new server, take Debian 13: it's the current stable release, with regular security support still running and two more years of coverage overall.

## Support window

Debian 12 Oldstable gets security updates from the Debian project until June 2028.

- **Regular security support**: Ended. The Debian security team covers a release for about three years, until a year after its successor.
- **Debian LTS** (until June 2028): Security fixes from the Debian LTS team, for most but not all packages.

## Upgrading

You can upgrade in place to Debian 13 by switching apt's sources from bookworm to trixie and running `apt full-upgrade`, as the trixie release notes describe. Take a snapshot first and read the notes on packages that changed.
