# Fedora VPS

> The current Fedora release, with newer packages. A new release comes about every six months, and each is maintained for about 13 months.

Run Fedora on a Rack4 KVM server with NVMe storage, one IPv4 address (IPv6 pending), installed from the official cloud image.

## Details

- Family: AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux and Fedora
- Support: About 13 months per release

## Why Fedora

Fedora is where many changes that later reach Red Hat Enterprise Linux appear first, with newer kernels, compilers and language versions than the long-term releases. We install the current Fedora release from the Fedora Project's Cloud image; `cat /etc/os-release` shows which one you have.

## When to pick something else

Fedora suits a server you're happy to upgrade about once a year. If you'd rather not, AlmaLinux 10 gives you the same dnf tooling with support until 2035.

## Support window

Fedora has a new release about every six months, and each one is maintained for about 13 months. We install the current release; you upgrade it to the next one yourself.

- **New releases**: About every six months, usually in spring and autumn.
- **Each release**: Maintained until about four weeks after the release two versions later: roughly 13 months.

## Upgrading

Your server stays on the release it was installed with; it doesn't move to the next one on its own. Upgrade with `dnf system-upgrade` before your release reaches its end of life, so at least once a year, and take a snapshot first.
