# Ubuntu 24.04 LTS VPS

> Our default: the release current guides and vendor instructions usually target, with standard security updates until April 2029.

Run Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on a Rack4 KVM server with NVMe storage, one IPv4 address (IPv6 pending), installed from the official cloud image.

## Details

- Family: Ubuntu and Debian
- Supported until: April 2029
- Our recommended default

## Why Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Ubuntu 24.04 is the image we preselect. Current guides and vendor install instructions are usually written for it, ours included, and it gets standard security updates until April 2029. If nothing you run asks for a different release, start here.

## When to pick something else

Take 26.04 LTS if you want a newer kernel and toolchains and your software already supports it; it also runs two years longer. Take 22.04 only for software that doesn't run on 24.04 yet. If you'd rather have fewer changes over a release's life, Debian 13 is the closest alternative.

## Support window

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS gets security updates from the Ubuntu project until April 2029.

- **Standard security maintenance** (until April 2029): Security fixes from Canonical for the packages in Ubuntu's main repository. Packages in universe are maintained by the community.
- **Expanded Security Maintenance** (until April 2034): Five more years of security fixes, covering main and universe, with an Ubuntu Pro subscription.

## Upgrading

Before standard support ends, `do-release-upgrade` moves a server in place to 26.04 LTS. Canonical usually offers the LTS-to-LTS upgrade once the first point release is out. Take a snapshot first, and re-enable any third-party repositories afterwards: the upgrade turns them off.
