AlmaLinux 9 VPS

Binary-compatible with RHEL 9, for software and control panels that list RHEL 9 support.

Why AlmaLinux 9

AlmaLinux 9 is binary-compatible with RHEL 9, which has been out since 2022, so vendor support lists are more likely to name it than RHEL 10. Pick it when the software or control panel you need lists RHEL 9.

When to pick something else

For a new server where your software supports it, AlmaLinux 10 is supported three years longer. If your team already runs Rocky Linux, Rocky Linux 9 does the same job.

Support window

AlmaLinux 9 gets security updates from the AlmaLinux project until 2032.

Security fixes, bug fixes and the updates that follow RHEL 9's minor releases.

Upgrading

Minor releases arrive with dnf upgrade. Moving to AlmaLinux 10 is a major-version change with no plain dnf path, so most people build a new server and migrate.

The image

Your server starts from AlmaLinux's own official cloud image, the one the project publishes for cloud servers, checked against its published checksum before it's used. Nothing is added to it but cloud-init's first-boot setup: your network addresses, your SSH keys, your hostname, and any app, packages or setup script you picked. Updates come straight from AlmaLinux's repositories with dnf.
