nginx VPS

nginx serving a placeholder page, with Certbot and its nginx plugin installed. Point a domain at the server and one command gets you HTTPS.

Who it suits

Static sites, and reverse proxies in front of apps listening on other ports. If you'd rather not run a command for certificates, Caddy handles them itself; if you're running PHP, the LEMP stack or WordPress app saves you the wiring.

Which plan

Budget is plenty for static sites and for a proxy in front of a small app: nginx itself needs only a few megabytes. Size the plan for whatever runs behind it.

What we install

nginx serving a placeholder page, plus Certbot and its nginx plugin, so HTTPS for your domain is one command away. A good base for static sites and reverse proxies.

$ apt Debian family (apt)
  • nginx
  • certbot
  • python3-certbot-nginx
$ dnf Red Hat family (dnf)
  • nginx
  • epel-release
  • certbot
  • python3-certbot-nginx

From order to ready

  1. Server ready. We email you when the server is running, and you can log in with SSH. The installer starts on that same first boot.
  2. Installer running. It logs to /var/log/vps9-setup.log; tail -f it to watch.
  3. Application ready. This can be minutes after SSH works. The installer writes its exit code to /var/lib/vps9-setup.exit; a value of 0 means installation succeeded. nginx is ready when http://<your IPv4>/ shows its placeholder page. There's no certificate yet: Certbot can only get one once your domain points at the server.

What you still do

  1. Point your domain's A and AAAA records at the server.
  2. Run certbot --nginx -d example.com.
  3. Put your site in /var/www/html (/usr/share/nginx/html on AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux and Fedora) or add a server block in /etc/nginx.

Exposure and security

Ports 80 and 443 are open for nginx, and port 80 serves the placeholder until you replace it. There's no admin page to claim.

Backups and upgrades

nginx and Certbot update with the system's packages, and Certbot renews certificates on its own timer. Back up your site files and /etc/nginx; certificates can always be fetched again. We run the hardware, the network and the first-boot install; after that, nginx + Certbot is yours to run, and we don't manage or update it for you. Off-site backups of the whole disk are an optional paid add-on; they copy the disk as it is at one moment, so keep the app's own backups as well.
