Debian 13 Stable VPS

Debian trixie, the current stable release: lean, slow-changing, and supported into 2030 with Debian LTS.

Why Debian 13 Stable

Debian 13 trixie has been Debian's stable release since August 2025. Debian changes little during a release's life, so a server you configure today behaves the same way years from now. The cloud image is lean, with fewer packages preinstalled than Ubuntu's, so you add what you need, ufw included.

When to pick something else

Take Debian 12 only if something you run hasn't been tested on 13. If your vendors and tutorials target Ubuntu first, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is the easier path.

Support window

Debian 13 Stable gets security updates from the Debian project until June 2030.

Regular security support
From the Debian security team, until about a year after Debian 14 is released. Debian puts out a new stable release roughly every two years.
Debian LTSuntil June 2030
The Debian LTS team carries security fixes on to five years in total, for most but not all packages.

Upgrading

When Debian 14 comes out, you upgrade in place: point apt's sources at the new release and run apt full-upgrade, following the release notes. Take a snapshot first.

The image

Your server starts from Debian's own official cloud image, the one the project publishes for cloud servers, checked against its published checksum before it's used. Nothing is added to it but cloud-init's first-boot setup: your network addresses, your SSH keys, your hostname, and any app, packages or setup script you picked. Updates come straight from Debian's repositories with apt.
