Ubuntu 26.04 LTS VPS

The newest Ubuntu LTS, with a newer kernel and toolchains than 24.04 and standard security updates until April 2031.

Why Ubuntu 26.04 LTS

Ubuntu 26.04 is the newest LTS, released in April 2026, with a newer kernel, compilers and language runtimes than 24.04. Standard support runs until April 2031, two years past 24.04, so a server built on it today goes longer before its first release upgrade.

When to pick something else

A new LTS takes a while to reach everyone: some vendors publish packages for it months after release, and some install scripts still check for 24.04. If you depend on one of those, try it on 26.04 before you commit, or take 24.04 LTS.

Support window

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS gets security updates from the Ubuntu project until April 2031.

Standard security maintenanceuntil April 2031
Security fixes from Canonical for the packages in Ubuntu's main repository. Packages in universe are maintained by the community.
Expanded Security Maintenanceuntil April 2036
Five more years of security fixes, covering main and universe, with an Ubuntu Pro subscription.

Upgrading

There's no newer LTS to move to yet. Point releases (26.04.1, 26.04.2 and so on) arrive with normal package updates, with no reinstall.

The image

Your server starts from Ubuntu's own official cloud image, the one the project publishes for cloud servers, checked against its published checksum before it's used. Nothing is added to it but cloud-init's first-boot setup: your network addresses, your SSH keys, your hostname, and any app, packages or setup script you picked. Updates come straight from Ubuntu's repositories with apt.
