Ubuntu 22.04 LTS VPS

An older LTS for software pinned to it. Standard security updates end in April 2027.

Why Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Ubuntu 22.04 is two LTS releases behind: 24.04 and 26.04 have both come out since. It's here for software that's pinned to it, such as an application or vendor agent that only supports 22.04, or a server you need to reproduce exactly.

When to pick something else

For anything new, take 24.04 or 26.04. Standard security updates for 22.04 end in April 2027, which is not long for a new server.

Expanded Security Maintenanceuntil April 2032
Five more years of security fixes, covering main and universe, with an Ubuntu Pro subscription.

Upgrading

In-place upgrades go one LTS at a time: 22.04 to 24.04, then 24.04 to 26.04, each with do-release-upgrade and its own round of testing. Building a fresh 24.04 or 26.04 server and copying your data across is often less work.

The image

Your server starts from Ubuntu's own official cloud image, the one the project publishes for cloud servers, checked against its published checksum before it's used. Nothing is added to it but cloud-init's first-boot setup: your network addresses, your SSH keys, your hostname, and any app, packages or setup script you picked. Updates come straight from Ubuntu's repositories with apt.
